    The most important thing you need to know about a bushcraft knife is how to use it. Practice makes perfect and learning how to get the best out of your knife is far more important than how fancy it is. Mors Kochanski and Cody Lundin could do more with a Mora #1 than most folks can with a $700 custom knife.

      Absolutely without a doubt, but having an awesome knife with a specific character is still better if you can afford and appreciate it. No certainly not needed, but still trully enjoyable if that's the way you roll.

    The reality is that most hatchets are overweight because 90+% of the wood we use in bushcraft for fire and shelter and improvised tools and every other use comes in the form of dry springy blowdown and green poles less than 3" in diameter. This calls for something light and fast, a heavy axe head is too clumsy for this kind of work and doesn't penetrate efficiently. Occasionally we may need to cut through logs as much as 8" in diameter to access dry wood in wet weather or construct things like bridges, but a 12 ounce axe head can absolutely handle this, and we tend to use saws for this kind of work anyway these days. The role of chopping tools in the age of cheap and effective folding saws has become quite limited, it follows that they must become smaller in size and weight. A 28 ounce hatchet with a 20 ounce head is not the right tool for any job right now in my opinion.

  • @nobodyatall7039
    @nobodyatall7039 Місяць тому

    You can make something very similar by just getting a Cold Steel Spike Hawk and cutting the spike off and filing it flat. You end up with a 12 ounce head with a durable and useful hammer poll, and bit geometry just flared enough for baton splitting. Just don't try this with the Pipe Hawk, it's too front heavy and won't balance well with the hammer cut off. Then there's the Frontier Hawk at 10 ounces, but the round back isn't geometrically stable and may deform from hammering. The modified spike hawk is the best pack hatchet I've ever used and is extremely similar to the GB outdoor axe at a fraction of the price. The heat treatments on CS tomahawks are excellent too.

    Here in the boreal forests of north Texas, on the edge of the tundra, we need a true felling ax to make wood and sod shelters when the temps drop below 50 F. It can mean the difference between life and death.

    Nice comparison and review. :) What I find mildly annoying about the OA is the protective collar. My opinion is it should either be longer (I mean I usually damage my axe's handles because of an overstrike which this collar will not help against) or gone.

      @@wildwaybushcraftuk Must be able to easily baton wood logs, be used as an impromptu machete or ax when needed, as well as be used as a conventional knife. All your choices are fine but not up to the task of a true bushcraft knife, they are too small and too thin in the spine. they are great as camp knifes but that's where it ends. I live in Montana, - ESSE makes quit a few, as well as the White River FC5 Firecraft. 1095 steel is excellent and so is S35VN, but there are many out there that will do the job, Its just when I hear the word bushcrafter to me it means - Do everything knife. Build a shelter, quarter a moose, baton wood, survival, etc. you just need something a little stouter than the ones in your vid. The word Bushcrafter is thrown around a little too much these days, Bushcrafter knife does not mean outdoor knife to me. Its means I can survive with just this one knife for a long long time. it's not the best at anything but can do everything.

    Yeah, but 175.-€ is a high price for this thing. Even the GB Scandi cost less. And you have a 64cm handle. And for ca. 90.-€ you could become a 800g w60cm handle 'Bison Oberharzer 1879' This is half the price! I think this is a great camp axe. Maybe you can do a comparison with that!

      @D00MTR33 4 місяці тому

      @@wildwaybushcraftuk I got that. I don't give much regard to factory edge and expect them to be sub par (it's a nice surprise when it's not). I typically sharpen most knives straight from the box. Shows me how good the steel feels and I can put on the edge angle and finish i want. I was saying, I don't see how anyone can review a knife without sharpening it because you don't know how easy it is or how the steel feels. Plus if a factory edge lasted long enough to do everything you needed for a review, it's either an amazing steel or it wasn't tested that much. Just my opinion.

    The SFA is harldly dead. It's very good and popular. But the SFA and the Åby are very different, for different uses. The Åby is longer, has a much thicker and heavier head, and is therefore heavier overall. The thick head makes it less of a felling axe and more of a splitting axe. Both are very good all around axes, but with different focuses.
